The Texas Mamma Jamma ride is one day that’s meant to help women battling cancer 365 days a year. It’s a day-long affair of solidarity and survivorship.

But Breast Cancer Awareness efforts are peddling way past this event. They’re revving up for a month full of passion, power and pink.

“So, I’m pretty much trying to just rock ‘n roll cancer off the planet,” Breast Cancer survivor Cherie Mathews said.

From October 11 to 15, News 8 Austin will take a look at breast cancer treatment beyond the IV drips, infusion rooms and hair loss. We’ll show you everything from pet therapy to fitness. We’re giving women the chance to take charge in their battle.

THE WOODLANDS – It was a sea of pink as Conroe Independent School District female athletes converged on Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital Wednesday afternoon to help breast cancer patients.

Nearly 20 Oak Ridge High School basketball players took a tour of the Breast and Bone Center to learn about breast cancer awareness and early detection. Female basketball players from Conroe, Oak Ridge, The Woodlands College Park and The Woodlands high schools raised roughly $10,000 during their annual “Pink Out” games in January to support breast cancer programs.

The girls donated the funds to healincomfort.com, which designs postoperative T-shirts for breast cancer patients. A shipment of the shirts was donated Wednesday to Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital.

“It totally hit home for me because my grandmother died of breast cancer,” senior Christian Beeman, 17, said.

Taking a tour of the Breast and Bone Center, senior Shelby Cage, 18, said the girls now know where the money they raised is going.
